Okay, so we know that these sorts of collectors items are not targeted at sensible, middle-class sorts of people. They’re targeted at completely looney rich folk who have lost their sense of judgement after years of eating nothing but imported salmon. But still, a million bucks for a toy? Come on.
This tiny Ferrari 180 Testa Rossa was made in Italy, and is the headliner at the Art of the Automobile auction in New York. Nestled in among other cars that cost well R100 million, the toy seems like a bargain.
Especially considering that the car was distributed through Luigi Chinetti Motors, the only licensed Ferrari dealership in the US at the time that the cars were built. Chinetti was a longtime friend, racing teammate and business partner of Enzo Ferrari – that alone makes up more than half of the price.
But consider also that the car is still in running order. Yep, with this pint-sized car packs 0.3 horsepower, which is drawn form its 12-volt motor. That’s enough to push it across a parquet floor – or round a cul-de-sac. Auction president, Alain Squindo:
This car is the pinnacle of what you would’ve given to that very lucky boy or girl. It’s something that nowadays would round out an eclectic collection. It would appeal to someone who actively collects sports cars.
Or someone who is rich, mad, and a few inches tall.
