Those in the know will tell you about the effortless vibe going down at Oasis Bistro, next to the pool at the Mount Nelson. No parking hassles, civilised, laid-back, and you won’t have to keep running into those losers you find in town.
You know the losers I’m talking about – the ones you find hovering in restaurants and coffee shops, with the express mandate to interrupt and annoy you. “Hey, howzit going?”
Well it was going fine until you decided to interrupt my meeting/lunch..
So the big question is, why do you keep doing that to yourself? Why would you arrange a lunch or meeting in a place where you KNOW you will be interrupted? Surely you’re more informed than that? Surely you’re a tad more sophisticated? Isn’t it time you grew up?
And that’s all before we even mention the ZERO parking-hassle factor and the easy entrance off Kloof Street (opposite Arnold’s), making Oasis Bistro the best kept openly-shared secret in Cape Town.
I’m surprised you don’t go there more often.
Oh dear – I’ve just realised.. Are YOU the person everyone’s trying to avoid?

The Mount Nelson Hotel’s Oasis Bistro has re-opened for summer with a perky new look and a contemporary al fresco flair. The restaurant offers an extensive Mediterranean-inspired buffet as well as an à la carte bistro-style menu with an impressive selection of grilled meats and roasted line fish. Guests can also look forward to daily specials harvested from local markets.
The fresh and colourful buffet includes a wide range of seasonal salads, home cured and home smoked charcuterie, fresh seafood and shellfish platters and a variety of South African cheeses. All sauces, tapenades and pates are made in-house and the exceptional breads are baked in The Nellie’s kitchens.
The selection of hot dishes changes daily and could include anything from Roast Beef with assorted baby root vegetable to Cape Malay Chicken Curry.
To finish off: expect tempting treats such as red velvet cake, the Mount Nelson’s legendary cheesecake, tiramisu, panna cotta and crème brulee, as well as sliced fresh fruits.
Sunday lunches are even more resplendent with the addition of a carvery station serving roast beef sirloin, leg of lamb, Beef Wellington, slow cooked slated beef, chicken curry and grilled line fish, as well as a magnificent selection of vegetable dishes.
Sous Chef Dion Vengatass, who will be running Oasis Bistro on a daily basis, earned his reputation by – amongst other accolades – winning the Unilever Food Solutions Chef of the Year award in 2011 and Best Creative Canapés in 2012 and Masters of Time 2013. Dion describes his style as: ‘Passionate, colourful and flavourful.”
The Bistro’s relaxed atmosphere lends itself perfectly to a warm and welcoming sunny bite. Complemented by a well thought out wine and cocktail list, and an inviting terrace overlooking the swimming pool, those “in the know” will have Oasis Bistro listed as one of their city summer hot spots.
