In a response to Apple’s launch of iOS 7, Google has come out with their very own revolutionary new mobile software update – the 4.4 KitKat. Android users will be happy to know that Google hasn’t made as stark of a change as Apple did with the new iOS, but they have made enough of a change to make the software look, feel and perform better.

On the face of it, the KitKat is a lot cleaner than than Jellybean, with a translucent menu bar at bottom of the screen and slight animation in the app selection menu. With a left-to-right slide, you’ll open up Google Now – where you launch a voice search simply by starting a sentence with “Okay Google”.

One of the best new features is the dialer. Instead of having a traditional address book where you search for existing contacts, the new dialer is web-integrated so that it can work like a digital Yellow Pages. You can now search for local restaurants, businesses or places of interest, and call them straight from the dialer. Neat.

Also, instead of showing up meaningless numbers when someone you don’t know calls you, Android 4.4 instantly pings the Google Maps database for potential matches. If it finds a match, it’ll show up with the businesses’ name and an accompanying picture – so you’re not left in the dark.
