Remember those famous lines in ‘The Social Network’? “The Facebook is cool that’s what it’s got going for it. You don’t want to ruin it with ads because ads aren’t cool.” Slowly, surely and inevitably, our social media spaces are becoming commercialised. We all knew it was coming – it’s just a matter of coming to terms with it, getting used to the new layout and trying to make the best of it. This time, it’s Instagram’s turn to start earning some cold hard cash.
Instagram had already announced earlier this month that they would be bringing sponsored ads on board, and yesterday revealed that the first sample ad would appear “in the coming week”. Although, Instagram is taking a more measured approach to ads, they’re not simply chucking every ad they can, but rather, they’re taking feedback from actual Instagram users.
We want ads to be creative and engaging, so we’re starting with just a handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community. If you see an ad that doesn’t interest you, you can tap the ‘…’ below it to hide it and provide feedback about what you didn’t like. This will help us show you more interesting ads in the future.
That’s not nearly as invasive as some of Facebook or Twitter’s ads, and it’s a refreshing change to say the least.
