Many of us are familiar with the pain of the long-haul flight. You emerge from your seat with your legs aching and feeling hollow. Your mouth is stained with drool, and you pants are covered in little bits of horrible airplane food. It’s a nightmare, and people generally agree that the less time spent flying, the better. There are, however, those among us who are able to take the pain of flying better than others, and are paying top dollar to fly on what people are calling “ultra-long-haul flights”.
Airlines are pushing their machines to the extreme, with tanked-up planes sometimes going near the North Pole, as they attempt to cut across the earth. Singapore Airlines are the current holders of the longest single-flight of all time. Their 21 and 22 flights between Singapore and Newark, New Jersey are about 15,300 kilometers long – and take up to 19 hours. That’s almost an entire day spent in one position.
Discovery Channel executive, Charles Yap, is apparently quite keen on this flight because it skips a connection in Germany, which can save as much as six hours. What does help is that all 100 of the seats are business class, and have hundreds of in-flight movies.
Below is a video summarising the flight, you might want to skip through it though- it’s a bit long.
