Much like Genghis Khan did in the in the early 1100’s, the Candy Crush Saga game is taking over the world, one woman at a time. The game is a variation of the “match-three” game format, similar to Bejeweled, where players attempt to make connections between three candies of the same colour. Sound boring? Some women might disagree – they’re spending £400,000 a day on this game.
Researchers suggest that our minds are naturally inclined to enjoy creating order out of disorder, which is what games like Candy Crush appeal to. According to one expert, Candy Crush is one of those “gender-neutral games that has a ‘moreish quality’ that can fit in flexibly around a woman’s life.” Whether that sounds sexist or not is up for debate.
700 million games of Candy Crush are played every day, and apparently some middle-aged British women have turned up to work with severe back injuries, due to hunching over their iPads all day. Women all over Britain are coming out about their addiction:
My back became strained because I’d been hunched for so long over my iPad. I couldn’t help it, it was so addictive. The extraordinary thing was that almost everyone else in the room admitted they too were addicted. Now we’re all competing.
Housework has gone to pot. I’ve even been late picking my ten-year-old up from school because I’ve been stuck on a level.
