I used Uber for the first time last night. It’s mindblowing. You download the app, store your credit card details (once) and next thing you’re watching the car (black Merc) heading towards you on the map. In a word, it’s ridiculous.
I went from Camps Bay to 95 Keerom Street, just off Long Street and it cost R84. And I didn’t have to handle cash – I just got out of the car. Think about that. Then, after dinner, I just loaded up the app again and typed in where I was heading (it automatically works out where your pickup address is) and the car was on it’s way. It even shows you a photo of the driver and his name.
Here’s a screen shot of when the car came to pick me up. I zoomed in as the car got closer and headed outside as he arrived. Come now.
These are brand new Mercs, not freshly puked-in London taxis and Toyota Ventures with broken doors and windows. What’s more the drivers are SLICK, wearing suits and they know how to drive and know the short cuts. It’s basically what you’ve been dreaming about.
Say goodbye to crap taxi services.
