When the team at Rockstar released their latest iteration of the Grand Theft Auto game series, their financial projections indicated that they hoped to make around $1 billion from the game in six months. Well, they may be adjusting that projection, after first-day sales generated over $800 million.
That smashes the first-day sales record of $500 million set by ‘Call Of Duty: Black Ops’. That game went on to claim $1 billion in sales in only 15 days, which is a faster accumulation of sales than the movie, ‘Avatar’.
Some fans flocked to stores at midnight to buy the game, which received widespread critical acclaim. About 8,300 stores in North America held midnight openings to meet demand.
The $1-billion retail milestone would rank “Grand Theft Auto V” alongside Hollywood’s top box office performers for the year, including Walt Disney Studio’s and Marvel Entertainment’s “Iron Man 3″ and Universal Pictures'”Despicable Me 2.”
Analysts believe the game could cross the $1 billion threshold before the end of the week. The mark would indicate that roughly 18 million copies of the game had been sold.
