The first Miss America of Indian descent has been crowned, and she’s not letting any haters get her down. It’s her first day on the job and she’s frolicking around the beach for snap-happy photographers on Jersey Shore. The dark-haired beauty had this to say:

It was such an incredible experience knowing my friends and family were watching. It was so meaningful and powerful.

Nina Davuluri is 24-years-old and a native of Syracuse, New York. That didn’t stop hateful tweeters thinking she’s an Arab though,

Davuluri said she wasn’t fazed by the criticism of her Indian heritage, “I always viewed myself as first and foremost American,” she said in the aftermath of her win.
