Shortlisted Names with Motivations
Buitenkant
“Central artery that runs through this hood”
Buitenkant Street is the cntral artery that runs through this “hood”. It retains elements of the history and is innocuous enough to avoid any political bias or connotation. I’ve always like the ring of “Buitenkant”. The word sounds strong and strength is what is needed to revive this area. One could also read into it that here are the people that are not in the inner sanctum of parliament, but rather the ordinary people, standing on the outside, looking into the seat of power.
Dunkley Distict
“Dunkley Square is at the heart of this vibey district”
Dunkley Square is at the heart of this vibey district within Gardens. It is home to creatives, advertising, film types. The name Dunkley District seems catchy and appropriate.
Roodehek
“A small road that exists, going back to Dutch times”
Will make a great logo – and a gateway to many possibilities
SoRo
“SOuth of ROeland allows simple identification of the area”
Using a variation of the famous Manhattan acronym, an association that Hood 8 deserves is so-named. SOuth or ROeland will allow simple identification of the area as well representation of its awesomeness.
Upper East Side
“Highest most Eastern corner of the CBD”
Please just not the Plectrum…it might look like one but I do not want to tell people O yes I live in the plectrum. Upper East side because it is the highest most Eastern corner of the CBD, or the City Bowl which ever you call it. Before you go up the mountain to Vredehoek or Gardens. Lower Gardens would also make sense as it is below Gardens. It is one of the oldest areas of Cape Town as Roeland street as it is now has stood there since 1750.
Little Gardens
“The area hosts a cradle of hidden gems”
The area as a whole, hosts a cradle of hidden gems. If you travel through every nook and cranny- (that are the roads that make up the area), you are transported into a miniature suburb which has everything you need. From the local pubs to the gym, Little Gardens may be the place you pass through everyday, but it has everything you need to call it home.
La Guma
“After the prominent writer and anti-apartheid activist who was imprisoned here.”
La Guma was imprisoned here. As a prominent writer and anti-apartheid activist, his name symbolises the rich cultural history of the area, from colonial times to the apartheid-era, and its subsequent transformation into a creative hub within the city of Cape Town.
HaMRo
“Triangle created by the streets Hatfield (Ha) Mill (m) Roeland (ro)”
Creative Quarter
“The next creative hub of Cape Town”
I believe that this region bordering the East City is going to become the next creative hub of Cape Town. By converted old manufacturing warehouses in the area, a creative hotspot consisting of food, design and other creative institutions will be born.
Wembley
“the building is tall and can be easily spotted from far”
People are familiar with this new investment into the area which has upgraded and rejuvenated the area. It needs to be recognized as the building is tall and can be easily spotted from far.
