Russian Vodka Gay Boycott: Technically Speaking, Stoli Isn’t Russian

Are you boycotting Stolichnaya vodka in protest of the anti-gay laws in Russia? You may want to think again. A gay rights advocate in Latvia, Kasper Zalitis who joined the forces boycotting Stoli, recently found out that Stoli vodka is actually made in Latvia.

Latvia broke free from Russian subjugation over two decades ago, and is home to the upmarket vodka brand.

Stuart Milk – the nephew of famous gay rights activist, Harvey Milk – said that the boycott is “misguided,” and would only lead to damaging a company not controlled by the Kremlin.

Up until 2010, Stoli advertised themselves as a Russian Vodka on their label, even launching a campaign in 2006, calling itself the “mother of all vodkas from the motherland of vodka.”

As things stand, the raw alcohol used in Stoli comes from Russia, while its water comes from Latvia, bottles come from Poland and Estonia, and caps from Italy.
