If you are a Harry Potter fan, prepare to squee. JK Rowling has been lured out of retirement. That’s right, she’s back and ready for action. She has signed a deal to write a series of new films based on the wizarding world exposed in the Harry Potter series.
Just two years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was released, Rowling has agreed to write the series which will take place 70 years before Harry, Ron and Hermoine spent their first night at Hogwarts.
The movies (which will most certainly be a massive success) will be based on the Hogwarts textbook Rowling wrote for a British charity, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Originally Warner Bros. wanted the film rights to the 42 page textbook, but Rowling said in a Facebook post:
I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts’, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it.
The deal with Warner Bros. will include films, computer games, websites, merchandise, and wait for it – Harry Potter themed resorts.
Warner Bros. said:
We are incredibly honored that Jo has chosen to partner with Warner Bros. on this exciting new exploration of the world of wizardry, which has been tremendously successful across all of our businesses.
The Harry Potter franchise has generated more than $20 billion worldwide.
