NASA has a VEGGIE program, thats short for the Vegetable Production System programme, somehow. After successful attempts to grow zucchinis and other plants in zero gravity under artificial lights, NASA has announced plans to sustain space travellers on the International Space Station with produce grown on the station itself.

This December, NASA plans to launch a set of grow-your-own-gardens for six romaine lettuce plants. The burgundy-hued lettuce will be grown under bright-pink LED lights and will be ready to harvest after only 28 days. Fresh veggies 370km above the Earth – yes please.

This is the first phase of a project with limitless possibilities. Could space-farms be the farms of the future? Could people on Mars grow their own food?
