TechCrunch is largely known as the world’s leading online news source for tech junkies, and over the weekend their annual technology conference, TechCrunch Disrupt was disrupted alright, but not in the way that they had hoped.
The conference was held in San Francisco and saw two presentations that shocked attendees for their misogynistic nature.
Watch this video. It shows a TechCrunch presenter showing his app to a crowded audience. The app is called ‘Circle Shake,’ the app is meant to test how fast you can shake your phone in a certain amount of time, while demonstrating this the presenter simulated some weird masturbation on stage.
And it doesn’t end there, Australian presenters Jethro Batts and David Boulton shows off their app, ‘Titstare.’ The app turned out to be fake in the end (thankfully), but Boulton described the app as:
[…] An app where you take photos of yourself staring at tits
The pair went on to describe the app as a healthy way for men to prolong life expectancy, asking the audience this question:
Did you know that looking at breasts is directly linked to a good, healthy heart?
Even though this presentation was supposed to be a joke, it offended many techies.
TechCrunch apologized in a blog post saying that these presentations were due to a failure in their screening process:
Trust us, that changed as soon as we saw what happened at our show. Every presentation is getting a thorough screening from this hackathon onward. Any type of sexism or other discriminatory and/or derogatory speech will not be allowed
Richard David Jordan attended the conference with his 9-year-old daughter, who presented an app she created, he tweeted this after:
