To celebrate The Football Association’s 150th anniversary, Buckingham Palace will host its first ever football game played on the Royal Household gardens. The event, scheduled for the 7th of October this year, will entail an official ceremony paying tribute to 150 volunteers that “help deliver and support” the UK’s favourite game. The President of The Football Association said in an official comment:
In our 150th year, it is hugely important for The FA to honour the efforts of the many thousands of volunteers who week in, week out, help to provide the opportunity for millions more people to enjoy football at grassroots level. Inviting 150 of these volunteers to Buckingham Palace provides a fitting way for The FA to pay tribute and give thanks.
Prince William will award these “grassroots heroes” with a medal, which will be followed by two of England’s oldest amateur clubs facing off on the gardens. Wembley groundsman, Tony Stones, will help create the pitch and make sure the players don’t trample on any of the queen’s roses.
