It’s finally here! The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch has arrived…and it’s awesome. Here’s the low-down.
You wear the device on your wrist, that part is pretty obvious, but what’s not obvious is that it can receive calls, send text messages, pick up notifications, control music playback, take photos, shoot 720p videos and record sound. The Galaxy Gear has a 1.9-megapixel camera, 1.63-inch touchscreen, a speaker and two microphones. It comes with multiple clock-faces and over 70 pre-loaded apps, but there’s loads more to download to help keep fit or do whatever else you want it to.
But its not all good. The smartwatch has been designed as a “companion device”, so it has to be paired with the new Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition, both of which were also launched at the same time as the watch. A software upgrade scheduled for October will allow the device to be paired with the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note II. Then there’s the battery, it only lasts a day. You’ll have to carry the docking station around with you if you want to charge it – there’s no simple plug-in USB charger for this “smart”watch.
That aside, the Samsung Galaxy Gear is a cool gadget of note. Characters like James Bond, Dick Tracy and Michael Knight all used similar devices – I do too!
