Every time the phone rings, this UK man hears cha ching!
After getting sick and tired of receiving numerous calls from telemarketers, he figured out a way to make money from the whole ordeal.
Lee Beaumont set up his own personal premium 0871 line. This cost him a total of £10 (R160) plus VAT. The hotline is the only number that he gives out to businesses and services he interacts with. Now to call him it costs 10p (R1,60), of which he receives 7p (R1,12) of that! Beaumont set up the line at the end of 2011, and has already made £300 (R4804,61)! He even encourages telemarketers to call him now, posting his phone number all over the internet.
The premium number regulator that Lee used is obviously strongly discouraging other people from doing this, saying:
Premium rate numbers are not designed to be used in this way and we would strongly discourage any listeners from adopting this idea, as they will be liable under our code for any breaches and subsequent fines that result
Lee has a separate, regular phone number for his friends and family to call him on.
