With tensions rising in Syria, key countries are weighing in on where they stand as to next steps and conflict resolution. Here’s what some of them had to say:
US – Secretary of State John Kerry, said the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government was “undeniable” and a “moral obscenity”. It seems as if the US are preparing for a military strike, as they have positioned war ships in the eastern Mediterranean.
UK – Foreign Secretary William Hague told the BBC, “the United States, [and] many other countries including France, are clear that we can’t allow the idea in the 21st Century that chemical weapons can be used with impunity”.
France – French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has called for “a reaction of force” if in fact chemical warfare was used. France successfully lobbied for the EU’s arms embargo to be lifted in May so that they, along with the UK, could supply the rebels.
Turkey -Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told Turkey’s Milliyet newspaper that the country would join an international force against Syria.
Israel – “Our finger must always be on the pulse. Ours is a responsible finger and if necessary, it will also be on the trigger,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday, while, like many others, condemning the alleged chemical warfare.
Iran – Iran warned a UN official that there would be “serious consequences,” if military action is taken.
Russia – Russia is criticizing any possibility of Western intervention, saying action taken outside the security council could bring “catastrophic consequences for other countries of the Middle East and Northern Africa”.
