The very dodgy son of the dictator of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, wants Michael Jackson’s famous bejeweled glove back.
Last week the US government attempted to seize over $71 million (R726,863,226) worth of assets from Nguema, claiming that that the plethora of expensive celebrity memorabilia he bought was with money he acquired from laundering “stolen” public infrastructure funds.
Officially, Nguema makes about $100,000 (R1,023,751) as forestry minister of Equatorial Guinea. Somehow, his net worth is a stunning $300 million (R3,071,253,071) which includes a Malibu mansion, a mansion in Paris, and a wine collection worth $2 million (R20,475,020). Here’s an interesting fact, 70 percent of Equatorial Guinea lives in poverty.
At a hearing last week, a US judge made provision for the property to be held by the US for the the duration of the trial.
The judge said that the US government still needs to provide more evidence that connects Nguema to the alleged criminal activity.
Nguema’s lawyers said:
The government still has not identified a single victim of extortion or bribery … where [his] money came from is a matter of pure speculation.
