A British grandmother is wasting away on death row in Bali for smuggling cocaine.
Housed at Kerobokan jail, which is nicknamed ‘Hotel K’, 57-year-old Lindsay Sandiford is awaiting her death. Lindsay was sentenced in January of this year for smuggling £1,5 million (R23,702,674) worth of cocaine into Bali.
Although prosecutors recommended that Lindsay be sentenced to 15 years in prison, judges disagreed and sentenced her to death by firing squad.
The jail, which was built for 350 inmates, now houses over 1,000 people.
Australian Paul Conibeer, was recently released from Hotel K after serving a sentence for not paying a hotel bill. He was held with murderers, rapists, and pedophiles.
He added:
You can’t have women and men in a prison together. You can’t have drugs and alcohol and hookers and all this crazy stuff going on. It’s not supposed to happen that way.
In many cases drug mules make the conscious decision to transport boat loads of drugs across international borders, aware of the consequences they might face. Should we really feel sorry for them once they end up in jail?
