Dread Pirate Roberts, creator and owner of the Silk Road online drug-buying portal has completed an anonymous interview with Forbes about his growing enterprise.
The Silk Road is a website where one can acquire heroin, methamphetamine, crack, cocaine, LSD, ecstasy and an insane number of marijuana varieties. Payment is possible via BitCoin.
Obviously, the founder, known to the world as the Dread Pirate Roberts, is insanely paranoid.
Roberts routed all communication with the Forbes reporter through the Silk Road, as he is the sole person who manages the forums and messaging system. He also uses Tor, a software that encrypts Web traffic, and then bounces it to thousands of computers around the world, to ensure no one will find the location of Silk Road’s servers.
Dread Pirate Roberts said,
The highest levels of government are hunting me. I can’t take any chances.
Anyone is able to download and run Tor, then exchange their currency for BitCoin, then go on a shopping spree! Once you purchase your drugs on Silk Road, they will be packaged and sent to you. Buying drugs has never been so easy…
Carnegie Mellon researcher Nicolas Christin says Roberts’ service was grossing $1,2 million a month in the first half of 2012. Forbes now estimates that the site has an annual run-rate of $30 million to $45 million.
Senator Chuck Schumer said the Silk Road is:
the most brazen attempt to peddle drugs online that we have ever seen … by light-years
How long before they find the dread pirate?
