It wasn’t a good night for the guests of this Florida resort in the town of Clermont. As they were settling down to go to bed, the earth opened up and swallowed most of the resort and their belongings into a 30m sinkhole. The guests evacuated in terror.
This is not the first time the earth has swallowed a chunk of the American state. Sinkholes are quite common in Florida because of the porous limestone on the surface of most of the state. The limestone holds an immense amount of water, which flows through it to create underground caves. When these caves collapse, sinkholes happen.
Check out the terrifying video of the building disappearing into the earth and be happy you live in South Africa’s Claremont, where the ground is a lot more solid than Florida’s Clermont.
