This little guy will literally bust your balls. The pacu is a relative of the piranha, so you can only imagine the damage it can cause if given the chance. These fish are normally found in the Amazon, but fisherman put Scandinavian swimmers on high alert after a pacu was found in the Oresund Sound.
The pacu which is also known as the “ball cutter” is capable of castrating a man in one bite. Fish expert at the Danish museum, Henrik Carl said:
The pacu is not normally dangerous to people but it has quite a serious bite, there have been incidents in other countries, such as Papua New Guinea where some men have had their testicles bitten off.
They bite because they’re hungry, and testicles sit nicely in their mouth.
And its mouth is not so big, so of course it normally eats nuts, fruit, and small fish, but human testicles are just a natural target. It’s not normal to get your testicles bitten off, of course, but it can happen, especially now in Sweden.
According to Carl, as only one pacu has been discovered, swimmers should not be discouraged to enter the water. But if they do, the National History Museum in Denmark provided these helpful tips.
Keep your swimwear on if you’re bathing in the Sound these days – maybe there are more out there!
In Carl’s opinion, “this one was the first, but who knows, it’s probably not the last”.
