I remember at school when I first learnt about using ‘I’ instead of ‘me’ – I felt very grown-up. I also remember some kids misunderstanding the rule. Something a lot of people haven’t grown out of yet.
So listen up – this is how it works. Quite simply:
Your choice of whether to use I or me is dependent on how the sentence would stand if the other person/people you mentioned in the sentence weren’t there.
So, here’s an example:
“The party will be hosted by Sylvester Stallone and me.”
That sentence is, in fact, correct.
Because if you removed Sylvester Stallone, it sounds correct. The party will be hosted by me. You don’t say “The party will be hosted by I.” Sure, you could say “I will host the party” – by the same token you would say “Sylvester Stallone and I will be hosting the party.” That’s a different sentence structure, but the rule remains true. Say it the same as if it was just you.
Or if you say, “The wall was painted by John and I” – that is wrong. Because you would never say the wall is painted by I. The correct way should therefore be, “The wall was painted by John and ME.”
So do you get that rule? Just take out the other person/people from the sentence and use me or I, depending on what would sound better in that case.
And, just in case 5FM are tuned in, please note that when someone hangs themselves, the past tense is ‘hanged,’ not ‘hung.’ Hung is when you’re talking about pictures.
Or me.
