The usually crystal white beaches that attract tourists to Thailand have been turned black. This is a result of a failed transfer operation on Saturday between a tanker and a seabed pipeline. Some 50,000 litres of oil were spilled with the main impact zone being Ao Prao beach on the Thai island of Koh Samet.
Employees from oil giant PPT Global Chemical have claimed responsibility for the disaster. Those responsible are taking part in the cleanup of the spill with volunteers and soldiers also lending a helping hand. The oil spill has resulted in many tourists vacating the holiday destination.
According to a spokesperson from PPT, the majority of the oil spill has been cleaned up but they are aiming for 90% of the remaining oil to be cleared by Friday or Sunday.
The environmental and economic impact of the oil spill is yet to be determined.
