The North Pole Environmental Observatory has stated that the summer ice in the North Pole is melting away. Where there used to be snow, there is now meltwater. The North Pole is in fact a lake, but it is normally a sea of ice.

In early July, temperatures were 2 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit (1 to 3 degrees Celsius) higher than average over much of the Arctic Ocean, according to the National Snow & Ice Data Center.
