It was quite fortuitous – for me at least – that Carte Blanche did an insert about shark research and shark cage diving on Sunday night. As it happens, I swam with Great Whites on Saturday. Check this out!
I was never for or against shark cage diving, but I was and still am well aware that it is a controversial discussion. One thing I can say for sure, is that people that are against it, really shouldn’t speak until they’ve been there and experienced it for themselves. From my own point of view there is just no way that you can relate chumming to shark attacks. It’s just too broad to call it.
We went with Marine Dynamics who are the leaders in this field, in my opinion. Their boat seems to be the most solid and stable and they carry out scientific research throughout the dives – tracking sharks and studying their movements, so we can learn more about them and help to protect them. They have to chum while they do this, and they let you enjoy the experience too. I remember noticing the guides with their clipboards, making notes of every shark we saw – analysing their unique fin markings.
Carte Blanche covered these studies on Sunday night. Check it out.

So that side is pretty interesting, but I’m sure you want to see what it’s like to actually go shark cage diving. I cannot recommend the experience enough – it’s beyond thrilling!
Check out this video I found on YouTube, showing the Marine Dynamics experience from start to finish, including footage from INSIDE the cage!
We stayed at Grootbos for the weekend and they arrange all these types of adventures for you during your stay. They’re just 2 hours out of Cape town so it’s super convenient.
Shark diving is just the beginning – they’ve also got Horse Riding, Fynbos hikes, cave exploration and more.
