A month ago a YouTube video surfaced of Buddhist monks wearing trendy eyewear, branded travel luggage and fancy headphones. All while traveling in a private jet. The monk seen front and centre of the video sporting gold aviators has been identified as Luang Pu Nenkham. The 34-year-old monk claims to be the reincarnation of a respected monk. The monk has been accused of throwing away his Buddhist vows.
The video resulted in an investigation of the monk by Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI). Nenkham owned some 83 cars as well as a very impressive property portfolio, which included plots of land, homes and condominiums. Authorities have also noted that almost $10 million (R98 million) had vanished from Nenkham’s banking account. Where did this money come from you ask? Quite simply, the money came from donations.
A warrant for Nenkham’s arrest has been issued. And the monk is facing charges of rape, and having sex with a minor, amongst others.
The DSI believes the former religious leader is hiding in California where he owns a Buddhist retreat south of Los Angeles.
