This biology experiment conducted by five 9th grade girls from 9b in Hjallerup School in North Jutland has caught the attention of researchers from Holland, England and Sweden. The five girls pictured below from left are Lea Nielsen, Mathilde Nielsen, Signe Nielsen, Sisse Coltau and Rikke Holm.
The girls took 400 Cress seeds and put them into 12 trays. They then placed six of the 12 trays in one room and the remainder in another, but both rooms were at the same temperature. All the trays received equal amounts of sunlight and water over a 12 day period. The six trays in one room were exposed to Wi-Fi, while the other six were not.

While biology and radiation experts are fascinated with the experiment, the experiment itself came about because the girls were unable to concentrate in class. Lea Nielsen said:
We all think we have experienced difficulty concentrating in school, if we had slept with the phone next to our head, and sometimes also experienced having difficulty sleeping.
The radiation from their mobile phones could not be tested on them as the school was not equipped to do so. The next available option for the girls was Cress.
The results of the experiment:
Cress that’s not exposed to radiation – healthy
Cress that was exposed to radiation – unhealthy
Nielson said:
It is truly frightening that there is so much affect, so we were very shocked by the result.
The girls are in the finals of the “Young Scientists” competition.
Among the researchers that have been impressed by the experiment is Professor Olle Johansson from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The girls’ experiment will be repeated by Johansson and a Belgian research colleague, Professor Marie-Claire Cammaert. Johansson said:
The girls stayed within the scope of their knowledge, skilfully implemented and developed a very elegant experiment. The wealth of detail and accuracy is exemplary, choosing cress was very intelligent, and I could go on.
I sincerely hope that they spend their future professional life in researching, because I definitely think they have a natural aptitude for it. Personally, I would love to see these people in my team!
The results of the experiment have cautioned the girls, they no longer sleep with their phones next to their beds.
