In Pamplona Spain the final day of the San Fermin festival was a blood bath, with 23 people being injured on Saturday. Bull runners who had blocked the entrance to the bullring while trying to escape the animals were crushed at the entrance according to officials. The stampede at the entrance of the tunnel meant people were piled on top of one another and the bulls were unable to enter.
Student and experienced bull runner Jesus Lecumberri said:
I felt anguish and helplessness for the people trapped there, not knowing how to get out.
Lecumberri managed to dodge the pile up and dived into a ground level hatch. Interior Ministry regional spokesperson Javier Morras said:
We all know that alley is a funnel and a critically dangerous point at the entrance to the ring. Pileups there are one of the biggest risks that can occur in the running of the bulls.
A side door was opened to allow the bulls to escape and clear up the blockage. A 23-year-old female was gored in the thorax by a raging bull according to regional health officials.
