Tennis Doping Under The Spotlight Again – Nadal’s Name Keeps Coming Up

Although Rafael Nadal has never failed a drug test, rumours associated with his name have constantly popped up throughout his career.

According The Daily Beast, an anonymous blog titled “Tennis Has a Steroid Problem” has a list of so called “evidence” against the Spaniard. The blog has this theme, “The opinion of this blog is that Nadal is benefiting from the use of performance enhancing drugs.

Here are some of the events/rumours.

  • Last year, on a French TV show, there was a skit featuring Nadal urinating in a car’s gas tank and using a steroid needle as a pen.
  • Yannick Noah accused the Spanish athlete of doping.
  • Retired, Christophe Rochus, questioned Nadal being able to dominate the 2012 French Open and then be injured two weeks later at Wimbledon.

The accusations against Nadal have turned into a kind of “witch hunt” against the Grand Slam singles champ.  Here are some conspiracy theories that could make you reconsider.

  • Nadal is built, really built.
  • He has had a collection of phantom injuries.
  • His hair loss.
  • He skipped the Olympics.
  • Spain has a doping history.
With all this speculation one has to make up their mind about the “King of Clay.” Is the legendary tennis player who had “denied any use of banned substances,” just caught in the performance-enhancing drug era, or is there some truth to the speculation?
After recent ordeals with people like Lance Armstrong, tennis as a sport needs to be carful that it too does not become sullied by dope chatter. Proving negative in a drug test is no longer enough to convince people, especially when Armstong had never tested positive.
