Yahoo has got its hand on yet another app. Xobni is its name and it boasts email and address book management features. The Internet company plans to use Xobni’s technology along with its own communications, namely mobile and PC versions of its email and IM services.
Although the cost of their deal was not for the public eye, technology blog AllThingsD estimated Yahoo spent between R300 and R400 million. In order for this collaboration to take place, Yahoo will be welcoming a reported 31 Xobni employees aboard, including Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bonforte (who previously worked for Yahoo).
According to Reuters, this is the latest purchase in a “string of acquisitions” by Yahoo since the new chief executive Marissa Mayer joined. Mayer apparently boasted “vowing to boost traffic to Yahoo’s online services and to revive the company’s stagnant revenue growth.” So far the company that has about 11,000 employees is on its way, acquiring more than a dozen web startups in the last year alone.
While Yahoo’s acquisition history is patchy at best, Xobni may be a clever buy for them.
Simon Barber, chief technology officer at ThoughtFaqtory said:
Xobni has great product and the technology they built was so impressive that Bill Gates demoed it on stage at the Microsoft developer’s conference. I think this is a good acquisition for Yahoo because they have an amazing set of products and with Marissa Mayer at the helm, they can really change the trajectory of Yahoo’s email and contacts strategy.
On top of Xobni, Yahoo acquired a fantasy sports team mobile app on Monday and another that creates mini-movies, named Qwiki.
