In 2010 Shrien Dewani was the man accused of arranging the death of his wife Anni on their “honeymoon” in South Africa. Dewani allegedly organised for his 28-year-old wife to be shot whilst taking a ride in a Cape Town taxi.
33-year-old Dewani is wanted for trial in South Africa, but as a result of “ongoing depression and post-traumatic stress disorder” the trial has been delayed.
Psychiatrist Dr Ian Cumming said Dewani isn’t mentally able to stand trial at an extradition hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court. The suspect that reportedly “cried all day” at his treatment clinic in Bristol also had an incident where he pulled down his pants and said, “If you treat me like a dog I’ll bark like one.”
In March 2011 Dewani reportedly tried to commit suicide by overdosing. He has also been able to use his laptop, the Internet and walk home if he is accompanied by a staff member. Dewani also spends most of his day in a camper van he was allowed to buy and set up on the hospital grounds.
Notably, however, a few signs of “improvement” have been noticed.
