This is one of the most iconic characters in computer gaming history. First published in 1987 as Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, we are now graced with Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded. It has high-res backgrounds, more than 3,000 frames and hand-drawn animations, and very clever dialogue, according to the Replay Games website.

Although the games were marketed as “naughty,” Al Lowe’s Larry was comedic but never explicit, and the remake retains that standard. There’s no full-frontal nudity, no four-letter words, and no on-screen sex. But we do have our comedic priorities: Larry is a story of a man on the make, and the game drips with innuendo, flirts with perversity, and oozes sexuality from every pixelated pore.
The new Leisure Suit Larry has been redesigned by Al Lowe and Josh Mandel and was funded through Kickstarter, but the funding campaign has resulted in the backers’s faces popping up all over the game constantly – referencing the 14,000 people who donated.
Writer Chris Kohler is of the opinion that if gamers were to purchase the game without knowing where the funding came from, the referencing of donors throughout the game would seem strange. But for those who are aware and donated, it pays homage to their efforts to have the game resurrected. Kohler said:
Would a game funded by traditional means feature the publisher’s CEO as an on-screen drunk? Actually, wait, the original Larry did just that with Sierra On-Line founder Ken Williams. And come to think of it, cheeky in-jokes about Sierra were always a hallmark of the classic games. So this isn’t totally out of character for the series.
Offering rewards such as having your face appear in the game itself offers incentives to those donating and through this, the game’s creators can receive more money. But Kohler feels the new Leisure Suit Larry may be a negative example of such reward offerings.
