Businessman David King claims to have lent golf legend Gary Player R6,1 million some ten years ago. King is now sueing Player for the millions plus interest totaling R33 million. But Player denies any allegation that he borrowed money from the businessman. King alleges Player borrowed the money from him in July 1999.
King’s claim against Player is pending. Meanwhile King has asked the Grahamstown High Court to attach shares that Player owns. The shares are in the Gary Player Stud Farm, breeders of thoroughbred racehorses. An interim interdict has been granted by the Grahamstown High Court and Player will have his day in court to explain why the interdict should not be finalised.
The claim made against Player by King and the attempt to have Player’s shares attached will be disputed by the golfing legend – this has been confirmed by Player’s attorney Mark Nettelton.
No affidavit has been filed by Player but papers attached to court documents read that Player denies any loan. Accroding to Player the money received from King was in fulfilment of a R6 million debt King needed to pay to IMG Sports Management. It is also noted that once the debt had been paid by King, he would have full access to the golfing legend.
