This 5-year-old is a fashion icon. Yes, you read correctly. Alonso Mateo has gained serious fame on Instagram for his fashion forward dress sense. Mateo is no stranger to labels like Gucci, Tom Ford, Diesel, Dior and AllSaints. This kid wears more designer labels in one outfit than we could ever hope to possess in our entire wardrobe.
Mateo is an Instagram superstar with five accounts solely dedicated to his style. His designer outfits normally first appear on his mother Luisa Fernanda Espinosa’s Instagram account. Since Espinosa started posting her stylish son’s pictures last year, she has to date more than 127,000 followers. And 230,000 photos catalogued of Mateo on Google Images.
Mateo may be five, but he is not the first child-style icon the world has seen. We all know of celebrities and their kids dressing in designer duds, the difference with Mateo is that his parents are not famous. Celebrity stylist Ugo Mozie explains why the pint sized style icon stood out for him when he discovered him on Instagram.
What first caught my eye about him was his confidence. His clothes were exceptionally tailored, drop-crotch pants, his hand in his pocket — that stood out to me.
Mateo is also no stranger to selfies – although taken with the aid of a mirror – his fans have even gone as far as to say he has swagger. He may not have famous parents but the fact that his mother is a freelance stylist and has contributed to Harper’s Bazaar Mexico and Latin America could have something to do with the style choices.
Mateo said in an interview with The Cut:
I love suits, sneakers, and sunglasses. I like to dress like my dad, because he has cool suits.
To ensure he is always trendy, Mateo’s mother shops at Kitson Kids, Dior, Gucci and Little Marc Jacobs to name but a few. According to Espinosa, Mateo puts together his own outfits every morning with her guidance. Espinosa said:
I’ll help him coordinate outfits so that they make sense, but mostly it’s him.
But not everbody is behind the little fashionista, and Espinosa has received some backlash regarding the way Mateo dresses. Espinosa explains:
‘You only teach him material stuff,’ they’ll write, or ‘he’s just a spoiled douche bag’. I think people usually judge right away.
When we go shopping, if he wants loafers just like his daddy and I can afford them, I get them. We’re fine raising our son. He’s always polite, he’s grounded, he’s a sweet boy.
I don’t know if it’s because he’s an only child and he’s surrounded by so many grown-ups that he kind of wants to replicate what everybody around him is wearing?
I don’t think he really notices he’s fashion forward. He’s too young.
