Three Chinese astronauts in orbit on the Tiangong 1 space module have given the first live lecture from space. China’s state run news agency Xinhua said that the televised lesson was seen by some 60 million students and teachers during its broadcast on China’s CCTV news channel.
Nie Haisheng and Wang Yaping demonstrated weightlessness as part of the lecture. Wang said:
In a weightless environment, we are very skillful marshal artists.
In another part of the lesson, Wang demonstrated “the properties of surface tension while in microgravity.” The lesson was interactive too, with Wang asking the students questions and vice versa. One question asked by a student:
Do you enjoy any view that’s different from what you can see on the Earth? Do the stars twinkle, and do you see the UFOs?
To which Wang replied:
From the window, we can see the beautiful Earth and the sun, the moon and the stars, but we haven’t seen the UFO. As we are now in outer space without the atmosphere, we can see the stars shining brightly, but they do not twinkle.
