The human excrement war is waging on for the Western Cape provincial government. Monday saw police beef up security on the city’s roads, trains and the areas surrounding the provincial legislature.
Rumours of “poo attacks” were circulating on Sunday evening and by Monday morning the police presence had significantly increased. While security was increasing, protestors and their leader Andile Lili were caught at the Esplanade train station in Ysterplaat. These protestors are believed to be responsible for the dumping of faeces. The arrests were confirmed by Lili, who stated that he and six others had been arrested. But according to Lili the reason for the arrests were unkown. Lili said:
We have not done anything wrong. It’s our human rights and dignity that’s being trampled upon.
This is the latest in poo attacks. Western Cape Premier Helen Zille had to cancel a scheduled visit as protestors from Harare and Khayelitsha threw faeces on her car. Zille was forced to leave the scheduled talk.
A little after 15h00 on Monday three men were seen dumping the contents of portable flush toilet tanks on the steps of the Protea Assurance building which is situated less than 200m from the provincial legislature. There was a security guard on duty but he was caught off guard.
One of the three men was Loyiso Nkohla, said the aim of the “poo dumping” was to have government experience what it is like for the poor in Makhaza.
The attacks, according to Zille, are part of a campaign to make the city ungovernable – part of the ANC Youth League’s strategy. Zille said:
It is bizarre that the campaign is focusing on the city’s ‘portable flush toilet’, which the city is using to eradicate the remaining bucket toilets.
The portable flush toilet is used like an ordinary flush toilet. The waste is stored in a tank that is clean, hygienic and odourless, and the tank is serviced three times a week.
