Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old ex-National Security Agency (NSA) technologist, explains in an interview with journalist Glenn Greenwald why exactly he did what he did. Snowden blew the whistle on the NSA wiretapping millions of American citizens along with obtaining details of their Internet usage. Snowden explains to Greenwald the reasoning behind leaking the confidential information.
The leak revealed that the NSA and the FBI were tapping directly into American Internet companies to obtain all of their information regarding client Internet usage. Snowden told the Guardian:
My sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them.
But the office of the Director of Natioanl Intelligence said:
The intelligence community is currently reviewing the damage that has been done by these recent disclosures.
Any person who has a security clearance knows that he or she has an obligation to protect classified information and abide by the law.
Snowden is currently hiding in Hong Kong as he fears for his life.
