In a documentary aired on Britain’s Channel 5 last night, the late Reeva Steenkamp’s parents revealed shocking details of their daughter’s relationship with Oscar Pistorius and the guilt they as parents feel for not being able to protect their daughter. They revealed a picture that Steenkamp had painted as a teenager, which her parents claim to be a premonition.
Oscar Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on the morning of Valentines Day 2013 in Pistorius’ Silver Lakes Pretoria home. Pistorius claims he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder.
In the documentary Reeva’s mother, June Steenkamp, recalled a phone call she had with her daughter while Reeva was driving in a car with Oscar Pistorius. June Steenkamp:
She phoned me and she said, ‘Mummy I’m in the car with Oscar and he’s driving like a lunatic’. So I said will you just give him the phone.
She [Reeva] gave the phone to Oscar straight away and I said hello. And he said “Mrs Steenkamp.”
I said, listen, if you hurt my baby in any way I will have you wiped out. I didn’t mean murder him, I’m just saying, that’s what I said. And I know the friend that was in the car was a friend of Reeva and a friend of Oscar and he told me afterwards that Oscar slowed down immediately.
Mrs Steenkamp also mentioned the couple had been fighting a lot. This according to what Reeva had told her mother.
A week or so later she phoned me, we chatted about this and that, little girl things. I said ‘how’s it going with Oscar?’ She said that ‘We’ve been fighting; we’ve been fighting a lot’.
The documentary displays the calls of Reeva’s parents for questions to be answered, “Why did Oscar Pistorius kill our daughter?” Another part of the documentary shows the eery painting that Reeva had painted as a teenager which is described by her parents as a premonition.
Reeva painted these pictures when she was 14, they’ve been in the house for a long time now, but we never really realised what they were about.
If you look at it now it’s clear as anything that this is a premonition.
Oscar Pistorius is set to make a very brief appearance in the Pretoria Magistrates Court today on a charge of premeditated murder.
