Grumpy Cat has become an internet sensation with her award winning memes. She has landed countless TV appearances and even has merchandise for her adoring fans. It seems only natural for the next step in her career to be movies. Yes, she will try her hand at acting in her “Garfield like” feature film. If you are still unfamiliar with Grumps, have a look at her blog.
Grumpy Cat was voted Meme of the Year at the 2013 Webby Awards. The cat’s constant unimpressed look is probably due to the fact that her owner decided to name it Tardar Sauce. But it’s not all about the name, the cat could be coming to a movie theatre near you.
Todd Garner and Sean Robins from Broken Road entertainment company have teamed up with Tardar Sauce’s manager – yes the cat has a manager – Ben Lashes and representative Al Hassas. Garner said:
This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy… You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.
The plan is a “Garfield like” feature film where Tardar Sauce can talk, obviously.
The cat has quite the resume. She was voted most influential cat of 2012 by MSNBC, most important Meme of 2012 by Mashable, she had made appearances on the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, Anderson Cooper Live, VH1 Morning Buzz and The Soup.
She has more than 930,000 likes on Facebook, stars in webisodes and has merchandise selling at Walmart, Hot Topic, Thinkgeek and other retailers.
New Line film productions has made Grumpy Cat’s feature film a top priority with actors Will Ferrel and Jack Black reportedly set to have main character roles.
