A 1931 Leica camera that belonged to German winemaker Karl Henkell, has sold for an outrageous R6,5 million. The Vienna auction held by Westlicht on Saturday did not expect the product to be this popular. It reportedly sold for more than three and a half times its predicted price.
The sale included rare images and the camera that took a historical photo of an American sailor kissing a nurse the day World War II ended.
Although this was the most impressive sale, other versions of the range were auctioned above expectation. A Leica M3 prototype estimated to be sold for about R900,000 actually sold for over R5 million.
Prototype Leica Reporter 250 estimated at 381,399.99 euros fetched R3,051,199.92
Famous photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt’s camera that took the popular nurse and sailor photo in Times Square after Japan surrendered in 1945 (below) sold for a crazy R 1,449,319.96.
Just a signed print of the photo above sold for over R300,000.
