Liking your job is a gift, but when you start loving your job, because of the “culture”, that’s when it becomes a completely different story. Tech startups have tried to instill this culture with great perks, like free food, fooseball tables, bars and snooker tables. But there always has to be a group that is better than the rest, and these are the guys. These startups and their “culture” make them the most attractive places to work.
Moving the office to Morocco.
That is exactly what co-founder of Maptia, Jonny Miller did. Miller loves to surf and decided the move should be one where he could be close to the beach, oh an because it was cheaper. They “spun the globe and found a cheap apartment only 10 meters from the Atlantic Ocean in the Moroccan surf town of Taghazout.” Convenient. And when the surf is good, you can forget about work. The team of five take to the beach and hit the waves. Miller and his team are currently building a travel site.

Commerce Sciences uses this tradition. Engineer Oren Ellenbogen said:
The last person to join the company is responsible to create a “starter kit” for the next one to join. Each kit is totally different and personalised (depending on how creative the last person is :)), ranging from funny jokes, interesting books to Nerf Guns and coffee capsules.
Musical desks.
HubSpot has 300 employees and every three months they all play a game of musical desks. You get a new desk, new neighbour, new enviornment. According to the founder Dharmesh Shah, it is also a good method to get your employees to clean up their desks.
Do you dream of being a singing sensation?
Softwire can make that dream come true, with singing lessons. Managing director Zoe Cunningham said:
We have a drum and a singing teacher who come into the office regularly to teach lessons to whoever wants one – we also have a couple of bands within the company.
Don’t worry if singing isn’t your forte, the company’s “morale budget” caters for another activity that is more suited for you.
Just been on an exotic vacation. Time to pay up “vacation tax.”
Employees at Quora have “vacation tax.” Nikhil Garg, an engineer, explains:
Employees bring in exotic food items for everyone in the office after every vacation/trip.
This is a pretty fun treat for everyone to experince.
Are office noise levels getting you down?
At Round, an Isreali startup, they have dedicated half a day to absolute silence. The first half of every Wednesday has to be conducted in silence. If you need to contact anybody in the office – email, text, write a little note. But noise in any form is forbidden.
