Eesha Khare has developed a new supercapacitor that is capable of charging your phone in a matter of seconds. The 18-year-old senior at Lynbrook High School in Saratoga, California has been dazed by her win. Khare’s new development won an award in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix last week. She was one of the three finalists for the Young Scientists Awards. Khare said:
I developed a new supercapacitor, which is basically an energy storage device which can hold a lot of energy in a small amount of volume.
According to Khare this technology could aslo be used to charge car batteries. And can be worn in clothing due to its flexibility, or it could be displayed on any uneven surface.
Part of the award is the R470 000 scholarship. With over 1 500 young scientists being asked to compete in the Intel competition, Khare managed to beat them out for the top prize. This will certainly stand her in good stead when she takes on Harvard University later this year.
The overall winner of the Intel competition was 19-year-old Romanian student Gorden E. Moore “who created a low cost artificial intelligence that can drive vehicles.” Moore received a R700 000 scholarship.
