A 40 kilogram meteorite collided with the surface of the Moon at a speed of 90 000 km/h which resulted in the biggest explosion recorded by NASA scientists. The collision was bright enough to be seen with the naked eye. The collision made a crater approximately 20 meters wide, which the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter could photograph when it passes the area.
In 2005 a programme was set up by NASA to determine how often these collisions happened on the Moon. Since its inception over 300 explosions have been recorded. This information is important to researchers when planning Moon walks on future space trips.
