Police confirmed on Monday that millions of rands had been stolen from the FNB Stadium shortly after the Justin Bieber concert. The Ocean’s Eleven style heist went off without any detection, indicating that the robbery was planned maticulously. The amount stolen is reported to be in the region of R3 million.
Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Magale said:
It is alleged that [a stadium employee] had locked money in the walk-in safe following the Justin Bieber concert and left for home last night at about 23:00.
When the employee returned for work on Monday morning, she noticed that doors leading to the safe had been damaged. And according to Mogale, the robbers entered the premises through the bathrooom roof. Using ropes, they abseiled down the three metre drop to the ground.
The most remarkable detail emerging from the reports is that the wall leading to the safe had been hacked at for several days, in order to break through the double thick wall. Stadium Management Jacques Grobbelaar explained:
They moved through the door into the toilet area where they created a hole which we believe was done over a period of time.
The Soweto stadium was on lock down and Mogale said video footage of the robbery was being obtained as an investigation gets underway.
