A “news machine” has been developed by Color Magazine and interactive designer, Jonathon Chomko in an effort to highlight sensationalism in journalism. The new machine turns user tweets into headlines, through various media filters.
The machine was built to highlight the inaccuracies in news that are heightened by technological platforms and media filters through which information passes before it gets reported as news.
Users tweet their “story” to @colorsmachine. The tweet gets read out by megaphone. That audio is captured tape recorder, and then converted into text that is shown on TV screen. The camera that watches the TV screen converts the text into a signal, and sends it to a radio antenna. The radio then reads out the braodcast, and whilst the broadcast is being read a microphone interprets the text again. And only then does the machine print the news.
