On Digital Media, operating as Top TV has been approved by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) to broadcast three adult content channels. Their three new channels are: Playboy TV, Desire TV and Private Spice. These adult channels will be broadcast from 20h00 to 5h00, daily. Viewers will need a double pin to access the channels.

ICASA said:

The Authority upholds the view that there is no law of general application prohibiting the production and distribution of adult content in the Republic. Only the production and distribution of child pornography is expressly prohibited by law.

This a last resort for the financially sinking Top TV, who sought business rescue in October 2013 under Chapter 6 of the 2008 Companies Act, which would have placed them in a protective bubble to avoid liquidation, and allow the time needed to restructure the company.

Local television industry insiders speculate that Multichoice already has a porn channel packaged and ready to go. Will they launch, now that the precedent has been set?
