A police officer was shot dead on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) hours ago. Shortly thereafter, gunfire and expolosions were heard at the Watertown district north of the University in an incident that authorities believe to be linked to the campus shooting. Adam Brown, a local resident said:
There were blasts, it could have been grenades.
MIT is in Campbridge. Just across the Charles River is Boston, where three people were killed and 180 injured during a bomb attack at the Boston Marathon. But no links have been drawn by authorities between the marathon bombing and the latest events.
MIT issued a statement:
MIT is heartbroken by the news that an MIT police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty on Thursday https://improvehearingnaturally.com/Buy-Nexium.html night on campus near Building 32 (the Stata Center).
Our thoughts are now with the family.
At around 2am, MIT police determined that the suspect was no longer on campus and that it is safe to resume normal activities.
However the MIT police ask that members of the MIT community remain vigilant in the coming hours.
MIT worked with multiple police departments in order to ensure the safety of the MIT campus.
Police officers swept the campus in search of the shooter and MIT sent text and email messages to the members of the MIT community asking them to stay indoors while the search continued.
