Popular internet messaging board, 4Chan runs on a similar premise to that of Reddit – community collaboration is their favourite pastime, especially when criminal investigation is involved.

Following the horrific bombing of the end line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, photographs have been released by investigating authorities depicting what they believe to be the bag that contained at least one of the explosives.

4Chan members picked up on the description of the bag, and scoured available pictures of the blast scene prior to detonation.

The community identified two men in the crowd, one of whom appeared to be carrying a large black backpack.

A photo taken not long after appears to show the backpack carrier without his luggage.

Investigations continue. Bear in mind that police weren’t consulted in the 4Chan thread.
